Ebonising is the effect of darkening or blackening a naturally lighter coloured wood to appear more like ebony wood (as dark/black as possible). Applying a mixture of vinegar and aged wire wool to the wood creates a natural reaction with the tannins creating a dark black, like ebony, while still allowing the wood grain to show through.
